International Women’s Day

Today, we honor the incredible achievements, resilience, and contributions of women worldwide. 🎉✨ From trailblazers in business, technology, science, arts, politics, and beyond, women continue to shape our world with their smarts and determination.

This morning I spent time reflecting on the women that have shaped my professional life.  I can think of so many examples, it is hard to list them all, but wanted to detail a few stories that really stand out.

Leadership - One particular leader comes immediately to mind.  My first manager at Conagra Brands took a chance on me.  I had worked in Human Resources for about five years, but a lot of my experience was on the administrative side.  She hired me and didn't waste a minute getting me involved in some challenging situations and projects.  She was always there for guidance and advice, but this example of leadership and confidence is what really stands out to me.

Mentorship - In 2022, I made the bold decision to open my own consulting firm.  I had been contemplating it for a couple of months, but didn't have the courage (or knowledge) to do it on my own.  One evening I was scrolling through Facebook and came across an ad for a workshop called "Your Corporate Exit Strategy".  I enrolled in the workshop and soaked up everything it had to offer.  I later enrolled in the paid version, and shaped my messaging, my offer, and learned the sales process.  She was there to give me advice and took a personal interest in my business.

Friendship - The Gallop Organization talks a lot about the importance of having a best friend at work.  I never realized how important this was, until I didn't have one.  I think back to one particular role I had, I was the only person on my team in Omaha, the rest was in Chicago.  My desk wasn't near any other HR Colleagues.  One day one of my HR coworkers from a different team walked by my desk and asked if I was happy in my new role.  I was happy, but something was missing.  She had me moved to their area, and we became great friends.  We have since both moved on to different companies, but still stay in touch.  In a simple act, she showed me how important it is to have a friend at work.

Encouragement - One of my first co-workers has continued to provide me with encouragement over the course of my 20 year career.  She has served as a reference, given me advice, and has been an overall champion in my professional life. We don't see each other often now, but when we do we pick up right where we left off.  She has proven time and time again how important it is to have someone that believes in you and can provide encouragement when you need it.

Each of these examples have had an impact on my professional life, which in turn impacts my personal life. I encourage you to spend some time reflecting on the women that have shaped your professional life and drop them a note to say thank you!
